James Cooley Obituary, Death – Laurens County Man Remembered for Faith, Family and Love of the Outdoors

James Stewart Cooley, 77, of Laurens County, South Carolina, passed away on September 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy centered on faith, family, hard work and the simple moments he shared with the people he loved.

James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He took great pride in caring for his family and providing for those around him. His strong Christian faith was an important part of his life, and he sought to keep both his faith and family at the center of everything he did.

A Life of Service and Family

James proudly served in the United States Army for one year. Away from his military service and work, he found happiness in the outdoors, particularly through hunting and fishing.

One of his favorite activities was fishing with his son, Jamie. Their time together on the water created memories that his family will continue to treasure. James also followed Clemson football closely and enjoyed opportunities to gather with family and share the activities they loved.

Music was another special part of his life. James loved to sing, and his voice and enthusiasm for singing became cherished memories for those who knew him.

A Lasting Marriage

James and his beloved wife, Karen, shared 48 years of marriage. Among the memories that best reflected their relationship were the times they spent dancing together in their kitchen.

Those quiet moments of music, laughter and companionship represented the deep bond they shared throughout their life together. Their marriage remained an important example of love and devotion to their family.

James was known for his hardworking nature and his willingness to care for others. His family remembers him not only for the responsibilities he carried, but also for the warmth, faith and love he brought into their lives.

Survived by His Family

James is survived by his son, Jamie Cooley; his daughter, Stephanie Renee Davidson; his siblings, Grace Floyd, Ronnie Cooley and Terry Cooley; his grandchildren, Jasmine Cooley and Cailey Cooley; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden New, Bailee New, Jordyn New and Brynleigh Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Karen Cooley; his parents, Woodrow and Jessie Cooley; and his sister, Linda Allison.

James will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The memories created through his faith, love for his family, time outdoors, singing and everyday moments of companionship will remain part of the family’s story for generations.

His loved ones take comfort in their faith and in the belief that James is now at home with the Lord, reunited with those who went before him and resting in eternal peace.
